The Adinkra Journal
for Wisdom & Healing
We are thrilled to introduce The Soulfulness Center's very first product! Our Adinkra Journal for Wisdom & Healing was inspired by TSC's Year of Wisdom and Healing course back in 2021-2022 that featured African adinkra symbols. Adinkras are visual symbols of wisdom from the Akan culture and are powerful sources of inspiration, guidance, and healing. Dr. Shelly has been studying adinkra symbols and their wisdom, as well as integrating them into healing and psychoeducational practices, for over 15 years. The interactive PDF version is available for purchase now! Our coil-bound, physical version will be available soon!

111 Featured Adinkras
We have carefully chosen 111 symbols to amplify for your healing. The journal reflects Dr. Shelly's extensive research on adinkras from diverse sources (readings, interviews, time in Ghana). The adinkras in this journal include well-known symbols such as Sankofa and Gye Nyame, symbols from the earliest documentation of adinkras (e.g., Adinkrahene), as well as symbols that have emerged over time. The journal also includes a listing of 30 additional adinkras to expand your knowledge.

5 THEMATIC SECTIONS
Adinkra symbols collectively reflect multiple aspects of the cultural wisdom of the Akan people of West Africa. Each adinkra is a representation of the cultural values and philosophies, with many connected to a specific proverb. They reflect ways of being, living, and understanding the world. These powerful symbols cover an expanse of topics from the specifics of daily life to overarching spiritual concepts. We have organized the symbols into 5 thematic sections to facilitate your exploration.

DESCRIPTIVE MEANINGS, "SOUL"FIRMATIONS, & WRITING PROMPTS
The journal invites you to work deeply with each adinkra. Your writing is inspired and guided by the provision of descriptive meanings, SOULfirmation statements (aka affirmations), and Soul Wisdom Inquiry questions (writing prompts). These resources were individually written by Dr. Shelly. They are an integration of her study of each adinkra, with deep meditation on each symbol in this journal.

FREE-WRITING SPACE & INSPIRATIONAL PROVERBS and Quotes
The second journaling page for each adinkra includes ample space for your own "Soul Wisdom" writing. Your are invited to explore your connections to the symbol in multiple ways. This includes your associations (words, images, memories, emotional and somatic experience), how the symbol can inform your understanding of yourself and life, and implications of the symbol's wisdom for managing your current life challenges. An African proverb or diasporic wisdom quote is included to further inspire your connection with the wisdom of each adinkra.

ALPHABETICAL INDEX WITH PRONUNCIATION
This index is organized alphabetically by the name of each adinkra. It also includes a keyword and pronunciation guidance. For ease of navigation, the page numbers are linked and take you directly to the adinkra of your choice.

CORE MEANING INDEX
This index is organized by the core meaning keyword associated with each adinkra. This enables you to choose a topic that you would like to explore and find a related adinkra. Rather than just using meanings that appear to be copied/pasted and repeated across the internet, our core meaning keywords are a reflection of Dr. Shelly's years of study, integrating information from many sources (books, articles, interviews, conversations, etc.), and attempting to distinguish some of the nuanced differences between adinkras with similar meanings.
